Firebox door won't lock
« on: March 14, 2015, 09:20:30 PM »
I've had my traditional upright for almost 6 years.  I've been on top of taking care of it and have noticed that the firebox door will not latch as the door or through heat over time has effected alignment.  The door is probably a 1/4" too low and doesn't close completely to catch the inside and pull closed.  No way I can bend it up that I can see.  I PM Gator on FB about maybe shipping back for a refurbish.  But at around $1200 or so for shipping want to do this as a last resort.  Ideas?? Love my Gator.

It looks like the lower portion of the door hinge is bent. Can take a pic looking straight at it?

I can't figure how anything could bend?

The 1/2" round bar on the handle that goes thru the firebox door needs adjustment.  Six years of use, heat expansion/contraction can require the door handle to be readjusted/aligned to close and snug up and lock.  Simple fix.  Take a piece of 1/2" pipe 18" long ideal.  Sleeve over the round bar inside the door side.  Slightly pull outward, pulling the round bar away from the door.  Check and repeat as necessary until you get the fit you want.  If you over do it, tap the 1/2" round bar back in toward the door.  That easy.  Let me know if I can assist with anything else.  Customer Service goes as long as you own your Gator, so don't hesitated to call 713-896-0144 or email me directly info@gatorpit.net.

I've got a somewhat related issue.  My party gator's firebox door shuts just fine, but I can't turn the handle.  It's stuck in the same position.  I tried forcing it open, but I think it is just bending the handle.  Any ideas?  I was thinking of getting a heating torch to have the metal expand and naturally break the seal.

I've had to adjust my door like that once before. I forgot about that.

Lubricate the handle where it goes thru the door.  May need to get penetrating lubricant and saturate if for a few days and gradually work the handle until it loosens up.  Always keep ALL hinges, handles lubricated.  Do periodically.  Moving parts require lubricant, otherwise, you risk them seizing up.  Usage or lack of is a big part of that occurring.  You also, have two washers welded inside and outside.  Get the lubricant behind those washers.

Thanks Ritch for calling me back, busy with work and have a piece of pipe of work to take home to adjust.  Thank you your personal time, why we wait for our Gator to be built, not the home cheapo deal.  I love my Gator and take care of it like it is my 68 Chevelle, some things are meant to last.

Just quick update, Ritch.  Your advise was spot on.  Put a bunch of penetrating oil through it and let it sit.  Gave it a few whacks with a rubber mallet.  Like new!  Love my party gator by the way.

Ritch did like you said and it is all good, also little WD40 on the handle.  Back in business.  Love my Gator!
