welding a stainless steel shelf onto my bandit
« on: July 14, 2008, 01:48:12 PM »
I was given some 17/7 stainless stell to cover the front shelf on my bandit. I want to have it welded over my existing grated shelf.

I don't know anything about welding so can you all help a brother out?

What type of weld is needed? What are some things to watch out/look for?

I am looking for a local welder and want to make sure I get what I need so i don't kill someone driving down the road when a piece of stainless flies off of my pit.

thanks in advance

Glenn, If it pre-cut to fit the shelf now, rivet it on.  Drill some holes around the angle framed and rivet it.  If you have to weld, use SS wire and MIG welder.  A general welder should know how to weld stainless.  Link for a little info on welding stainless:  http://www.thefabricator.com/Consumables/Consumables_Article.cfm?ID=903

By the way, how is Dick Wood?  Haven't heard his name metioned lately.   2fun

Oh that's a good one, now I have to kill you

I don't speak of the dickster cause last time I bragged he came back so now I just wait for the next dumba$$ to come along

I was hoping for a clean surface with no bolts or rivets

The stainless is cut and bent so that it has 1/4" lip against the smoker and the front is flush

I wanted to wrap the front down but beggars can't be choosey

when I talk to the welder I'll ask what the cost is to fab what I want instead of using the freebie

You can Liquid Nail or 100 percent silicone it down.  However, over time, heat and weather will take its toll and you need to reapply the adhesive again.  Unfortunately, you may not realize this until you see it flying down the road in your review mirror at 70 MPH.  Or when you get a call from police stating you owe damages for the table going thru some one's car windshielf or grill.  Why I rivet down.  :)
